WaterWater plays an important role in Serendipity Gardens, as it does in any landscape that offers habitat to animals. One of the four requirements of being a certified natural habitat is the presence of water.

Ponds and Pots

We have several ponds and two pots of water.

The ponds consist of a ground-level pond about seven feet in diameter, with a smaller pond about three feet in diameter  above it. Water from the small pond flows over rocks into the larger pond, and creates the water noise that adds so much to the ambiance of the garden. From the large pond, the water then flows through a little stream down and across the yard to another small pond. From there, a pump helps the water make the journey through hidden pipes back up to the top pond, where it feeds into the upper pond and creates the waterfall.

My husband and grandson created this water system several years ago, which is a story in itself. Suffice it t say, we all learned a lot in the two-year process.

We grow waterlilies in one of our pots, and in the other, seen above, we grow nothing, though one year, two frogs took up residence there. This pot of water is in the shade, and simply makes a soft bubbly sound as its little pump circulates the water. Here, on a fall day, the pump is still, and so is the water. Several yellow leaves dot its surface, and the tree from which the leaves fell is reflected. I, for one, find this simple vision peaceful and compelling.

A Super Easy Garden Project

This kind of water in the garden is so easy to do. Just get a pot with no hole in the bottom, and a small pump feature of some kind. This particular one is bamboo “pipes” that simply rest across the top of the pot. Make sure the pot sits level, fill it with water, plug in the fountain, and voila! You are set to enjoy a little water noise and occasional moments of stillness, too.
