Serendipity Gardens is out in the country. One of its features is a fire pit that we don’t use often enough.

Quarterly Birthday Parties

I feel very lucky that my three grown daughters all live close by. However,  finding time and a way to celebrate birthdays has gotten more and more challenging as their lives have gotten busier and busier. Does your grown-up family have a similar challenge? What do you do to make it work?

Our response to the birthday dilemma is to celebrate birthdays on a quarterly basis. Just recently, we had our fall birthday party, with four of us as guests of honor. This particular party was one of the best ever.

What Made It Special?

One thing was that every family member was present, including grandson Nick, who came from Purdue where he is a junior.

Fire, LydiaAlso, in addition to eating a birthday meal followed by the usual cake, ice cream, and presents, we did something different. After it grew dark, Chuck, with Nick and son-in-law Michael, built a fire in the fire pit, which is located outside the garden proper. The rest of us took the slightly spooky walk down the dark garden path and through the gate to reach the fire. We sat around it on bales of straw for a couple of hours, goofing around and enjoying each others’ company. Grandchildren and adults alike enjoyed roasting a few marshmallows, making s’mores, and watching the flames.

For the finale, the grandchildren helped to light some bio-degradable Chinese lanterns and watched them float up into the night sky.

In short, a good time was had by all at Serendipity Gardens!
